Appearance: Moth flies have a fuzzy, moth-like appearance due to their hairy bodies and wings. They are tiny, measuring about 1.5 to 5 mm, with dark grey or brownish wings that don’t fold neatly over their back.

‍Behaviour: These flies are commonly found near drains, sinks, and other moist areas. They breed in organic matter buildup, especially in kitchen and bathroom drains. They are poor fliers, often seen crawling along walls and surfaces.

Appearance: Similar in appearance to moth flies, sewer gnats are small and have a greyish colour with wings covered in fine hairs. Their wings stick out at an angle, giving them a moth-like appearance.

‍Behaviour: Sewer gnats are attracted to stagnant water and moist environments where organic matter has accumulated. They thrive in sewage systems, septic tanks, and drains and are commonly active at night, although they are drawn to light.

Appearance: Filter flies are slightly larger than moth flies, measuring around 2 to 4 mm in length. They have a more delicate appearance with lighter-coloured wings, often with small white spots or markings.

‍Behaviour: Filter flies are typically found in wastewater treatment plants, where they lay eggs in the organic sludge and debris. In domestic settings, they are attracted to the organic buildup in drains, especially in bathrooms.

Appearance: Sand flies are slightly larger than typical drain flies, with a black or dark brown body and clear wings. They have a stout body and short legs, making them less delicate than moth flies.

‍Behaviour: Unlike typical drain flies, sand flies are outdoor insects that breed in slow-moving water. They are biting flies that feed on blood, and although not a typical indoor pest, they can sometimes be found around wet areas and drains.

Appearance: Phorid flies are small, dark-coloured flies with a distinctive humpbacked appearance. They have brown or black bodies and a fast, erratic flight pattern.

‍Behaviour: Phorid flies are found in decaying organic matter, including drains, garbage, and rotting food. They are fast-moving and often breed in drain pipes, making them common in kitchens and bathrooms where organic debris is present.
